“Folks, I’m a proud Democrat, but I will govern as an American president. I’ll work as hard for those who didn’t vote for me as those who did.” -President-elect Joe Biden
Let me start this off by saying I am excited. I am not excited that Biden won, I am excited Trump lost. A Trump loss is a win for BIPOC, LGBTQ+ people, poor people, immigrants, non-Christian religious people, etc. A Trump loss is a win for anyone who does not fit Trumps far-right agenda.
I did vote for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. I voted for my rights, I voted for the bodily autonomy of my female and non-binary friends, I voted for my friends who are DREAMERs, I voted for racial equality, I voted for the climate. I voted for the equity and equality of rights for all people.
The majority of the numbers are in and Joe Biden has a 5.5 million+ vote lead in the popular vote and has secured 290 Electoral votes, even if anything changes Trump would have to win 2-3 States in the recounts and that is likely not to happen (mainly because widespread voter fraud isn’t real).
Now I am not a huge fan of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, I think they are establishment Democrats and moderate-left at best. They both have things in their past that I am not a fan of, but they have both apologized and learned from a lot of the mistakes they have made. I voted for them because they are worlds apart from the current administration.
That is the thing about a majority of the the people who voted for the Biden/Harris ticket, we are quick to criticize them and expect better from them. We criticized Kamala for her treatment of Trans Women when she placed them in mens prisons, we criticized and she listened and recognized what she did was wrong. We criticized Biden for the inappropriate things he had done in the senate and he listened and apologized. These next 4 or 8 years I will be 1 of the 76+ million people criticizing the administration, we will not be complacent with the status quo.
The current administration has a lack of respect for BIPOC, LGBTQ+ people, immigrants, poor people, non-christian religious people and even Christians that don’t fit their narrative. The current administration has a lack of respect for any person that doesn’t looks like them or think like them.
The current administration has made a cult of their followers. Trump could say anything and his followers would listen without questioning what he says, his followers listen to him almost as close as real Christians listen to Jesus and it is terrifies me.
This election was a big win for POC, I mean the Vice President-elect of the United States is a Woman of color. Women of Color helped the Democrats win the presidency in Georgia (at least thats how it looks, as of 11/11 Joe Biden is up 14,000 votes). We as Democrats need to recognize that Women of Color won Georgia for us, and the election in general. Women like Stacey Abrams, Tamieka Atkins, Helen Butter, Nsé Ufot, and Deborah Scott. These women won us Georgia; not the Democratic Party, not the Biden campaign, not white democrats. And these women are still working their asses off to give us the Senate. Georgia has 2 runoff elections in January and they are working hard to get Jon Ossoff and Rev. Raphael Warnock elected.
The fight for equality and equity is not over now that Joe Biden and Kamala Harris have won, we have to hold them accountable for every misstep they make over the next 4 or 8 years. We have to pressure them to make the decisions that are best for our country. We need to hold the Biden/Harris administration to the commitments they made during the campaign.
